Joe Calzaghe Retires!

Published by R at 7:01 pm under Fighters Edit This

Joe Calzaghe has finally announced his retirement from boxing, quashing all hopes of a rematch with Bernard Hopkins.

Calzaghe, whose record stands at 46-0, had stated several timesĀ that his victory over Roy Jones Jr would be his last, but hopes that he would continue did linger.

A challenge from fellow Britain Carl Froch came to nothing and calls for a rematch with Hopkins have not been enough to tempt the Welshman back into the ring.

Calzaghe retires from the sport with both a CBE and an MBE, together with that perfect undefeated record and will be sorely missed, particularly on this side of the Atlantic.

Criticism of dodging big name fighters in their primeĀ and being a “stay at home Joe” will continue to bug him, but his record speaks for itself and Calzaghe has been a champion for over a decade with 21 title defences to his name.

Calzaghe will undoubtedly rank amongst Britain’s best and after his retirement he may well get some of the credit he did not get whilst fighting.
