Margarito v Mosley

Published by R at 10:27 am under Fights Edit This

On Saturday night/in the early hours of Sunday morning, we are treated to the first big fight of 2009 when Antonio Margarito, fresh from his destruction of Miguel Cotto, faces Sugar Shane Mosley, who enjoyed a last second knock-out of Ricardo Mayorga in his last bout.

Margarito enters the fight as firm favourite as he is now considered one of the forces at 147lbs following the aforementioned demolition of Cotto. Such was the manner of this victory that many seem to be completely writing off Mosley’s chances, however I feel this is a little premature.

Although no longer the force he once was, Mosley still has the potential to cause a major upset tonight given his experience, durability and solid chin. Mosley won’t merely stand and take Margarito’s blows, like Cotto did and will be more evasive than the Puerto Rican.

Margarito is understandably the favourite, but this will be no walk over and if the fight goes the distance Sugar may take a decision as he still has good hand speed and his shots may carry more venom than those of Cotto.

Prediction: It would be easy to predict a Margarito win here, as many have but I’ll go for a shock points victory for Mosley.
