Barrera to fight for WBO interim title v Nolasco?

Published by R at 2:27 pm under Fights Edit This

Reports from Mexico indicate that the upcoming Marco Antonio Barrera bout against late replacement Johnny Nolasco could be for the WBO interim Lightweight title.

Although unconfirmed at present, the WBO appears to be of the opinion that because Nate Campbell is not fighting until February 14th, Barrera as mandatory challenger, should fight for the interim title on January 31st.

WBO, WBA and IBF champion Campbell is due to meet Ali Funeka (30-1) on St Valentine’s Day with the winner likely to face Barrera later on in the year.

Fighting for the interim title at this stage would be another small step in Barrera’s journey to become the first Mexican fighter to win four world titles in four different weight divisions, having already been champion at Super Bantamweight, Featherweight and Super Featherweight during his illustrious career.

I’ll keep you posted!
