Has the IRS forced Mayweather’s ring return?

Published by R at 8:00 am under Fighters Edit This

It may well be that the US treasury department will force one of the best pound for pound fighters of our generation into a comeback, as Floyd Mayweather Jr has reportedly been handed a $6 million income tax bill relating to 2007.

This follows a burglary at Mayweather’s Las Vegas home towards the end of 2008, in which it is reported that $ 7 million in jewellery was stolen. Floyd is, therefore having a rough time, and he may feel that a return to the ring is required to continue to fund his extravagant lifestyle.

However, Mayweather’s next opponent is difficult to identify. With Hatton v Pacquiao looking set for May 2nd in Las Vegas, Mayweather will have to wait until at least October to meet the winner.

In the meantime, he must balance a credible return against jeopardising his legacy, as more than a year out of the ring may have taken its toll on Mayweather, who turns 32 this year.

Dream bouts against the likes of Margarito, Cotto or Williams seem very unlikely, and a tune up fight for the winner of Hitman v Pacman seems much more plausible.
